I was shocked when I originally heard the news. The end of the great and powerful Netscape!? I knew that it was suffering, but somehow I just never could have imagined tht it would end some day.

When I tried Netscape, I hated it. Web pages looked funny, alien interface…. Nauseating. Very apple Macintoshy.
So I used Virus Explorer right up to IE 6.
I’m from New Zealand I could only get dialup and VIrus Explorer simply can’t download web pages with dialup (as far as I know, there’s no way to turn on http pipelining).

I tried Firefox for some reason. I hated that too. Clearly it was just Netscape _somehow_… But then I discovered how FAST I could make it go!

It made the web so fun that I started building bits of the web myself.
When it came to testing my work, I discovered just how bad IE is. I will write a full page of code without checking it. Lo and behold, it will work perfectly in every browser (usually) — that is, every browser except IE who finds everything possible to break, and breaks it. 80% of my development time is spent working aroudn bugs in IE. Big Opera and Firefox fanboy here. I’ve gotten feeling bashful about using the superior technology

So Netscape is dead? THE browser giant is finally gone??
I can’t wait for Internet Explorer to either follow in its footsteps, or do 8 years or so of catching up to modern browsers. Yay for improvement!

(PS I do think IE is slowly getting better. IE7 was a pathetic and pitiful improvement, but at least it’s an improvement.)

YES there is a lot of fun to be had with this.
Other fun tricks can include:
- using addhandler or addtype or whichever to have php actually parse .js files in some directories
- use mod_rewrite to just make the .php look like .js

Those will just change the file extension. That’s not very useful, really but for some they might be worth thinking about.

But no, the most fun and important part of using php to generate your javascript (apart from it being dynamic) - for me, at least - is being able to control the headers! You can send instructions about mime types, caching, the weather, feeding goldfish…. anything you want! You can do that with apache as well, of course, but if you’re going to be using php to make dynamic scripts then you may as well play with the headers using php, too, no?

Firefox has an extension called Firebug for debugging Javascript.
There is an extension availalble which in turn extends firefub. I think it’s called phpbug. It sends debugging info back to phpbug through the headers (JSON encoded) — so you could have a perfectly valid script, and debug the php part of it without breaking it, through a console.
